Any organisation will struggle to bring world peace to a group of disparate nations that have differing religions, differing economies, differing resources and differing government styles.
The organisations you mention do not (and did not) include every nation in the world and, until it does so, there is no mechanism for discussion globally. But surely making an attempt is better than doing nothing?
Is the Cold War gone? No, it’s still there, albeit lower profile than it was – but Putin and Bush still have stand-offs. As regards the arms industry, this is still very much alive and well – that doesn’t need the Cold War to survive.
I don’t believe, either, that we all live under the “umbrella” of the USA. They may consider themselves to be the “Global Police” sometimes, but they have proved that they are incapable or unwilling to carry through with some actions (and, in some instances, why should they?)
There are two antidotes :
1. We are all brought together by some global catastrophe or (unrealistically) a challenge to the planet as a whole (alien invasion or an asteroid strike, perhaps).
2. We reach a state of contentedness where every human has enough to eat, enough money to satisfy them, and is generally happy with their lot in life. This, I think, is even more unlikely than an alien invasion.
Wow is that a loaded question… but the bottom lines are money, power, and religion. The UNO cannot solve these problems unilaterally and single handedly…not until we experience some kind of (unfortunate), all-unifying, massive, catastrophy that reminds the nations of the world that we are all humans living in nations with fictional borders, and ultimately living on this one planet together.
