The timing could’ve been better but yes I agree, Hamas was democratically elected by Palestinians, whether we like it or not. Trying to reach a peace agreement without their involvement makes no sense. How do they plan to implement the plan(if the don finally agree on one).
It will simply lead to civil war, more attacks on Israel, chaos, even worse relations with neighboring countries. Peace in northern Ireland was achieved by involving IRA. So there would be no peace without Hamas’s involvement. Which everyone is aware of, but Israel and US have no intention to take into consideration, b/c simply it wouln’t result in their form of agreement.
Hamas must be serious about peace as well, if they are too be involved, then they simply have to accept Israel as a sovereign nation. Otherwise their is no point of them being involved. Israel must stop building settlements if they’re serious about peace, and must put East Jerusalem on the table, the biggest block against peace.
Hopefully something positive will come out, Peace in northern Ireland was achieved by involving IRA, I don’t see any long term peace without Hams being involved, whether we like it or not.
So Carter is right in this regard, has more understanding of world relations then Bush(past 8 years are proof), more aware of the sensitivities involved. You can not achieve peace by ‘you’re with us or against us’. However I think nothing new will come out of these new talks, new deal same old blocks.
Al Gore “won” a Nobel Prize too. So what?
Carter was an idiot as president, and he’s still an idiot today.
